About our Whole Lamb Share

We like to promote whole lamb shares direct-to-consumer for a few reasons:

BETTER VALUE: You get the most nutritionally dense and sustainably raised meat available for $10/lb, based on the dressed/hanging weight of the lamb after processing. This is unbeatable when you consider retail cuts range from $12/lb for ground lamb to $37/lb and beyond for rack of lamb. We can provide this for you because costs are less when we’re not processing retail cuts, and we spend less time using fewer resources than having to market, store, and ship those retail cuts.

LESS WASTE: By choosing a whole lamb share, you get all of the cuts minimally processed, so there’s less waste during processing and you ultimately take home more food. This packaging uses less plastic than retail cuts, and we use less energy on the farm storing retail cuts until they are purchased.

MORE RESPECT: By handling and consuming all of the cuts, our customers are reminded that this was a whole animal that lived and thrived on perennial pasture. And it connects you more directly to us and our farm- we raised these animals for you and are grateful that you complete the cycle on our regenerative farm.

SUPPORT LOCAL: Without point of origin labeling requirements, not knowing where your meat comes from hurts everyone. Buying your meat as close to home as possible adds to your local economy, lowers your carbon footprint by decreasing storage and shipping requirements, and lets you decide with your own eyes and ears how you want your animals to be raised. There are lots of options for grass fed and finished meats right here in Iowa. New Zealand is a long way away. Like, really long.

BETTER CULINARY ESCAPADES: A whole lamb in your freezer will inspire a whole new way of creating masterpieces in your kitchen, and we’re here to help. We’ll provide a cooking guide along with your whole lamb share, and our Autumn Edition of Lamb’s Quarterly will feature lots of tips and tricks for all the bits. A slow smoked lamb brisket will rival any spareribs or brisket you’ve had on the BBQ circuit, and braised lamb shanks over garlic mashed potatoes will make your Uncle Joe cry.  Pasture finished lamb’s nutritional profile is unparalleled, with Omega-3 fatty acids rivaling that of salmon. A diet that includes grain-free pasture finished animals helps balance out our Omega-6 to Omega-3 fatty acid ratio for less systemic inflammation and so many other benefits. Do your research! It’s fun!
